The United States Constitution created a federated form of governance, which has translated to financial services regulations. As the past century has dramatically changed the shape of banking and securities regulations, both industries have become subject to a web of overlapping and at times competing state and federal regulations. The banking and securities industries have been subject to varying degrees of centralization of regulatory authority, but states still retain significant power and authority over how both industries are legislated.
