RE: New National Immigration Poll

BROAD BIPARTISAN SUPPORT FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM

Preliminary results from a new national poll conducted by Center Forward in March 2021 show broad bipartisan support for protection from deportation and a path to citizenship for  Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients, and undocumented farmworkers living and working in the United States. As Congress is set to vote on immigration legislation this week, it remains clear that voters in all corners of the country recognize the need to fix the system with reforms that are humane, common-sense, and that provide economic stability for these individuals and the greater economy.

This poll shows that a majority of Americans agree that Congress should pass legislation to permanently protect Dreamers and TPS recipients so they can continue to live, work and contribute to the only country they know as home. Dreamers, TPS recipients, and all immigrants are integral members of society in the United States: building their families, and contributing to their communities and our nation’s economy.

Notably, this more targeted and narrow piece of legislation earned the support of 53% of Republicans which highlights the recognition by both sides of the aisle of the need to pass immigration reform. These initial numbers reflect previous consensus on the need for immigration reform. In the coming days, Center Forward will release additional results from the poll.

TOPLINE NUMBERS

74% of respondents support legislation that would create an earned path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who were brought here as children, people who are contributing and working here legally due to war or natural disaster in their home countries, and farmers and other essential workers. 50% strongly support the legislation and only 21% oppose.

– Additionally, when we break out the individual components of the legislation we see that 83% of voters support a path to citizenship for Dreamers, 84% support a path for TPS recipients, and 64% support a path for undocumented farmworkers and other essential workers.

60% of voters support creating a path to citizenship for all undocumented immigrants who can pass a background check.

58% of voters recognize that the U.S. is the only country Dreamers have ever known and therefore a convincing reason to support a pathway to citizenship.
