The House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member emphasizes the importance of keeping the Farm Bill process bipartisan.

As the leading Democrat and Ranking Member on the House Committee on Agriculture, Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) joined Center Forward’s Agriculture Summit to provide an update on the future of the Farm and Nutrition Coalition. The Congresswoman, who deeply understands the challenges faced by families relying on nutritional assistance, emphasized the importance of rebuilding SNAP benefits. She believes that by allowing states more time to adjust and align their SNAP error rates, states can implement these benefits more effectively, ensuring that those who need them receive the support they require.

The discussion consistently highlighted the importance of the intersection of family farming and nutrition. Rep. Craig has been vocal about her concerns that separating nutrition and farm programs in this year’s Farm Bill process undermines the tradition of bipartisan compromise that has historically united the Farm Bill coalition. She warned that this approach, combined with recent cuts to SNAP, poses a risk of causing lasting damage to the coalition, potentially impacting future Farm Bills. 

Rep. Craig addressed her ongoing efforts as Ranking Member to expand farm credit access and other relief measures to alleviate the economic pressures faced by the next generation of producers. This critical challenge demands immediate attention. Rep. Craig expressed concern over the struggle for access to capital for family farmers, which will likely lead to an increase in farm bankruptcies, underscoring the committee’s priority of expanding market access for farmers.

Representing Minnesota’s 2nd District, which encompasses both suburban Twin Cities communities and rural farming areas, the Congresswoman gained firsthand insights into the varying priorities of these constituencies. While there are differences, they often converge around affordability, food access, and economic security. As Congress collaborates with the Senate on the 2026 Farm Bill, Ranking Member Craig remains dedicated to advocating for family farmers and creating opportunities for their economic success.
